The Kingston Design Connection Showhouse 2019

Maryline Damour created the Kingston Design Connection to connect Hudson Valley interior designers, other designers, artists and makers, and potential clients to use each other as resources on projects, as well as raise awareness about their presence in general. Last October, they put on their second showhouse in the historic city, located just two hours north of NYC (you can see their first showhouse here). When these various creative people join forces for something like a showhouse, you can see that creativity in effect, maybe getting some fresh, original, and outside-the-box ideas for yourself along the way.

This year, they took over 302 Clinton Ave, an 1860 brick building in the Italianate style on the historic register in the Stockade District, now a boutique guesthouse called The Wiltwyck.

Both showhouses have been very inventive and creative. The 2018 Showhouse (10 spaces, ~100 participants) was dedicated to dark, moody, fun fantasy within the realism of the area's existing structures and their attendant challenges; uniquely, it also considered the novel idea of a budget being a thing. The 2019 Showhouse (16 spaces, 200+ participants) indulged the same sense of whimsy and daring even more for an artistic space to experience as a showhouse, with many cool ideas and takeaways.

This dining room by Ana Claudia Design Studio is a gamechanger. The whole space feels so refreshing and uplifting, and, of course, that ceiling is the statement. Don't take our word for it, though—check out this article by House Beautiful on the room, "A Wallpapered Ceiling Is Our New Favorite Design Detail." With such a statement, playfully reflected with a couple of area rugs on the floor, the rest of the room has to play it cool, and glass, wood, and dark finishes along fixtures and furniture is the way to go.

Hard to pick a favorite element in this stunning kitchen by Mercer Interiors, so we won't even try. But we'd be remiss not to mention what an inspired idea it was to mount our GIbbs sconces sideways for undercabinet countertop lighting. (A peek at Mercer's moodboard for the kitchen reveals our picture light Accord in Aged Brass was also considered—another cool, creative idea.) This beautiful bedroom with a small industrial atelier workstation is so inviting. Warm colors, mixed metals, a mélange of new and vintage items, and the presence of both a place to rest/dream and a place to work give us 21st-century A Room of One's Own vibes. You can see how Newburgh-&-Brooklyn-based Hendley & Co continued a sense of unity and flow from room to room with this shot on Instagram, which shows the Bowery chandelier in the same sightline as Webster, with a Bowery floor lamp by the desk.

This smart and sprucy space came together in just nine days! Many of the historic buildings in the Stockade District are being turned into office space. This office shows how to retain the historic character of the area, while also remaining contemporary and stylish. Check out Alexandra Studios' Instagram post on it here.

This may be the most stylish, sophisticated children's room we've ever seen! The combination of textural layers, plaid patterns, and fun forest fantasy here are so inspired. The multitalented Simone Eisold of Reset Your Home put this space together, and we love the mint green-dark brown-light pink combination. How do you feel about it? Mitzi's Avery pendant in Mint and Polished Nickel helped define this wonderful color scheme. Some "children's rooms" are totally unrealistic, but in this Instagram post, you can see kids enjoying the dollhouse and fun ladder-rope contraption in the corner.

 

We hope this post has given you a couple of cool ideas to get creative, go bold, and think outside the box with how you use colors, patterns, and lighting fixtures in your space.
